Richard takes referrals from ‘The Pain Clinic‘ at Southmead Hospital – A nationally recognised centre of excellence for pain management

‘A pain in the neck’ isn’t funny. However it is extremely common and well treated with acupuncture. It may be mild and not much more than stiffness and restriction of movement or it may be so debilitating as to make almost any task feel impossible.
Sleep may be affected by neck pain. This may contribute further still to the neck pain as the individual becomes increasingly tense.
The position of the neck at the top of the spine and its need to support the head make it more vulnerable to injury than any other part of the spine. Fortunately it is much less common than back pain.

Causes of neck pain
Neck pain can come from a wide number of causes. Maintaining an awkward position may result in neck muscles becoming over tired causing the joints of the neck to become ‘locked’ in position, this creates discomfort, stiffness and restricted movement. Neck pain can also be brought on by a whiplash injury – for example if someone drove into the back of a car you are in, or a medical condition (swelling, tumour, bleeding, inflammatory response, etc.). Sometimes neck pain may also cause headaches.

What will the Acupuncture treatment be like?
For neck pain, tension and injuries, the acupuncture points used are usually in the neck /shoulders and upper back but also can be on the arms, legs, hands or feet, other areas may also be used.
The needles are incredibly fine and most people are not put off – in fact they are usually pleasantly surprised by how they enjoy the treatment.
The sensation of ‘needling’ is like pulling a hair out of your arm. Try it!
How many Acupuncture treatments?
The number of acupuncture treatments required will depend on a number of factors: how long someone has had the symptoms, the intensity of the symptoms at the time of starting treatment, stress/lifestyle may also play a part and some advice may be given to help further
Why else to choose acupuncture:
- Very Low risk: Acupuncture is very safe when performed by a trained professional.
- Naturally calming: Many people feel deeply relaxed during or after treatment (often falling asleep during treatment).
- Drug-free: It helps the body heal without medication or potentially worrying side effects.
- Minimal discomfort: Needles are hair-thin and usually painless.
Mild effects only: Rare side effects include slight redness or brief bruising
