Migraines are suffered by at least 10% of the population and are three times more common in women than in men. They usually feel like an intense throbbing or constant pain that affects either one or both sides of the head. Often with pain behind the eyes. Pain can be made worse by bright light. There can be nausea or vomiting.

Often sufferers experience visual disturbances such as flashing lights, auras or blurred/pixelated vision.

It is not uncommon to see this type of headache at the weekend after working excessively long hours during the week, under pressure.

What will the Acupuncture treatment be like?

For migraines, the acupuncture points used are often on the arms, legs, hands and feet, though other areas will also be used for instance close to the ears.

Frequency of Acupuncture treatments for Migraine

Treatment is usually weekly until the migraines have been subdued (perhaps 5 or 6 treatments) and then the time between treatments would be increased to find the optimum frequency for controlling the headaches with minimum treatment. Where migraines are particularly frequent and debilitating, more frequent treatment can be required until the severity and frequency of the migraines decrease and the patient is more able to cope.
