Osteorathritis affects the joints
This not only causes damage to cartilage, the connective tissue and the inflammation of these tissues but also allows bony growths to develop, inhibiting movement and causing pain. Those who suffer from it are generally over the age of 50.
Patients are increasingly turning to acupuncture for the pain of arthritis. It can be effective in all areas but we especially notice people coming who have it in the knees, hips, neck, shoulders or back. Anti-inflammatory drugs have been shown to have unpleasant side effects; surgery is not always possible and may not be desired.
What will the Acupuncture treatment for Osteoarthritis be like?
For osteoarthritis, the acupuncture points used are usually around the site of the arthritis and often further down an affected limb. Other parts of the body such as the back, neck, and so on may also be used.
The needles are incredibly fine and most people are not put off – in fact they are usually pleasantly surprised by how they enjoy the treatment.
The sensation of ‘needling’ is like pulling a hair out of your arm. Try it!

How many Acupuncture treatments?
The number of acupuncture treatments required will depend on a number of factors: how long you have had the symptoms, the intensity of the symptoms at the time of starting treatment, how heavy your use for that joint is, and your overall health. A good yardstick is to anticipate 6 treatments with about a week in between. After those 6 treatments we reduce the frequency to find the sweet spot between remaining more comfortable & minimising the number of treatments. Often patients will ask to come back months later for a top up.
Why else to choose acupuncture:
- Very Low risk: Acupuncture is very safe when performed by a trained professional.
- Naturally calming: Many people feel deeply relaxed during or after treatment (often falling asleep during treatment).
- Drug-free: It helps the body heal without medication or potentially worrying side effects.
- Minimal discomfort: Needles are hair-thin and usually painless.
– - Mild side effects only: Rare side effects include slight redness or brief bruising
