Richard takes referrals from ‘The Pain Clinic’ at Southmead Hospital – A nationally recognised centre of excellence for pain management.

Rheumatoid Arthritis – a worldwide problem that can occur at any age.

About 1% of the world’s population is affected by rheumatoid arthritis, women are three times more likely to have it than men. Onset is usually between ages 40 to 50 years, but it can occur at any age. It can be a disabling and painful condition.
Although the cause of rheumatoid arthritis is not known, an autoimmune response plays a crucial role in its chronic character and its progression.
It is diagnosed mainly on symptoms and signs, but also with the use of X-rays and blood tests (particularly with a test called the rheumatoid factor).
After diagnosis a variety of treatments are used including analgesics and anti-inflammatory drugs. while newer group of biologics has increased treatment options.
Relief from acupuncture
Acupuncture has been shown to provide pain relief in rheumatoid arthritis and an anti-inflammatory response may also be present. Acupuncture is also thought to decrease pain by increasing the release of chemicals that block pain, called endorphins and possibly others that reduce the inflammatory response.

What will the Acupuncture treatment be like?
For Rheumatoid arthritis, the acupuncture points used are usually around the site of the arthritis and further down the affected limb. Other parts of the body such as the upper back, neck, and so on may also be used.
The needles are incredibly fine and most people are not put off – in fact they are usually pleasantly surprised by how they enjoy the treatment.
The sensation of ‘needling’ is like pulling a hair out of your arm. Try it!
How many Acupuncture treatments?
The number of acupuncture treatments required will depend on a number of factors: how long someone has had the symptoms, the intensity of the symptoms at the time of starting treatment, overall health and lifestyle.
Treatment early in the disease is preferable but age and duration of the disease should not be seen as barriers to treatment
